A Monument to Cucumber
This most unusual monument can be found in 5 minutes of walk from the Nizhyn city train station. The unique monument does not look very shining-green, but it is very natural in its simple shape. The Nizhyn cucumber has acquired enormous popularity due to the visit of Catherine the Great (a Russian Empress), who tasted the vegetable during her trip about the country.
Unfortunately, we do not know the details of the story - whether the cucumber was fresh, or marinaded, or pickled; we are not even sure that the great empress tasted it in Nizhyn or in any other town. But after the first tasting, she ordered to supply the royal dinner table with Nizhyn cucumbers, once and forever.
The order of the Empress brought regular income to the city, for all the noble families of Russia started to order Nizhyn cucumbers in their turn, too. The Nizhyn cucumber has quickly taken the leading position in the market of the time. Soon after that, the other agricultural products of Nizhyn started to acquire certain popularity in capital and all over the vast territory around.
The grateful citizens of the town established the monument to the lucky, wealth-bringing vegetable.
