Since the beginning of the Soviet era and till today, the first two weeks of May  have been marked by a chain of celebration events taking place in all  states of the former Soviet Union. The First of May, or the International May Day was celebrated as a holiday of solidarity of workers. The Soviet communist party leaders paid special attention to this celebration, as it helped to promote socialist ideology and unite people with positive working spirit. Then, the 9-th of May  - the legendary Victory Day was celebrated pompously and was practically turned into a ritual date for all Soviet citizens. People loved these holidays, as they had always been associated with revival of nature after winter. On the wonderful sunny days, it was not difficult to call people out into the streets for mass demonstrations of happiness and consent with the country's policy.

Today, people never remember about the political background of the holiday - they simply celebrate both dates as the victory of spring over the long, cold winter. The governments of the FSU republics (especially those on the European territory) support the wish of their people to have a little vacation time, and there are always a few days out of work around May 1 and around May 9. The working week in between these dates is never hard or hectic to majority of companies. Many people plan to visit their families in other cities, or go out into the open nature for picnics, or start the planting season at their countryside land plots.

If you are planning to visit Ukraine in the period between 1-st and 10-th of May, please be aware that there may be difficulties with buying transportation tickets to various directions, or the people who you were hoping to meet may not be in their home cities. Everyone is planning their May holidays today. Happy May Holidays to you, too!
