A new educational establishment - a university for elderly men and women - was recently established in Ukraine. This event has brought significance to Ukrainian society.
The fist University of the Third Age was established 5 years ago in the city of Kovel of Volyn oblast, under the guidance of the City Veterans' Council. This year another university was open in Kremenchuh of Poltava oblast  and then two more schools - in Kiev and Cherkasy , are in project.

The Ministry of Health explains that, due to the opportunity to remain socially active, the attendees of the University can overcome psychological difficulties and depression which are typical signs of the retirement age. The lifestyle offered by the university, allows each student to refresh and broaden their knowledge, and to realize personal skills in comforting and friendly and healthy environment.  The sponsorship and assistance comes from the city budget, from international grants and from local sponsors.

The project of developing the network of educational establishments for elderly people is provided  by the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy, along with the Population Foundation of the UNO.

Teachers and the office staff are not paid for their work. All staff and tutors are volunteers, who are also in retirement age, and do their work for pleasure.

Currently, there are three departments in the Kovel university (medical, social and juridical, art) and three departments in the Kremenchuh's university (cultural-explanatory, historical, and faculty of health). There are about 200 students in both Universities. Students are obliged to attend their classes, which are scheduled in the morning time, three times a week. Beyond the classroom study, the students attend excursions, have picnics together, and arrange discussion meetings with their group mates.
