Languages Of the World
Languages live, die, move from place to place, and change with time. In past, languages were considered to be spoken, then written, and then an understanding and explanation of their grammar was attempted.
According to the report of the Ethnologue organization, there are currently 6,912 living languages, defined as languages that people speak today. Only 230 are spoken in Europe, while 2,197 are spoken in Asia. There is an interesting fact, that the spot of the world with the highest level of the linguistic diversity is Papua-New Guinea. There are about 830 languages are spoken by the population of about 5,5 million people. That means that one language for every 6,500 habitants.
The most spoken language of the world is Mandarin, It is a native language for 870 million people and for 180 million as the second language. English language is native for about 340 million people, and it is the second language for 170 million people. Russian is on the six place in the most spoken languages. It is the native language for 145 million and the second language for 110 millions people. Ukrainian language is one the 24th place in the list, where 37 million people consider it as the mother tongue.
The topic of the chatroom is devoted to the human languages. We will discuss the following items:
What languages do Ukrainians prefer to learn?
Why people study the foreign language?
What are the difficulties in the learning of the languages?
What does it mean for me to know a foreign language?
What languages are in demand in the different place in the world?
• Africa
Africa has the second largest number of languages after Asia but it accounts for only 11.8 % of all language speakers in the world.
• Americas
The Americas are rich in languages with small numbers of speakers.
• Asia
Asia has the largest number of languages and the largest number of speakers, accounting for 61% of all language speakers in the world. There is a striking difference between median and mean number of speakers.
• Europe
Europe has the smallest number of languages and the second-largest number of speakers after Asia, accounting for 26.4% of all language speakers in the world. Unlike Asia, the majority of Europe's languages have a substantial number of speakers. As a result, Europe has the largest median and mean of all world areas.
• Pacific
The Pacific accounts for 0.1% of all language speakers in the world and has the lowest median number of speakers of all world areas.
