Traditional Ukrainian beliefs
Ukrainian Traditional Beliefs

by Katya Shtamburg

The tradition to have a horseshoe nailed above the doors of the house is international. In ancient times people of different nationalities
believed that a horseshoe brings a good luck. In some countries people believed that it keeps witches away. Horseshoes are made of iron and the strength of the iron was thought to protect from evil. The position of the horseshoe itself is very important. It must point upwards like a cup so that the luck cannot fall out.

Well, I guess you know this tradition. And what about Ukrainian traditions, believes and folklore sayings? Do you know something about them?

Here, you will find weather folklore sayings to help you forecast weather with a funny touch. Actually towns-dwellers don’t believe in all this, but if you visit Ukrainian villages and demonstrate you knowledge of the folklore sayings to the villagers… Well, you will be regarded the smartest foreigner that ever visited our country!

Evening grey and morning red, put on your hat or you’ll wet your head

Evening red and morning grey are sure signs of a fine day

If the smell of flowers is unusually perceptible, expect rain. Flowers smell best just before the rain

Tulips open their blossoms when the temperature rises, and close again when the temperature falls

If autumn leaves are slow to fall, prepare for a cold winter

When dogs in your house start looking paranoid schizophrenic, expect a thunderstorm for several hours

When dew is on the grass, rain will never come to pass

Frogs croak before a rain, but in the sun are quite again

When smoke rises but not too high, clouds won’t grow and you’ll keep dry

When sparrows are having bath in pools, the weather will be hot

Cockroaches are more active before a storm

If you have read all this and don’t smile… Well, the weather will be definitely awful...
